What's Eating Gilbert Grape?

There are some movies which can be tagged (to borrow a word from the virtual world!) as emotional manipulation, but isn't that why we go to the movies. Naysayers can give a crap load of other reasons why they go the movies but I am coated with an anti-crap emulsion, whatever that means.

Right from the opening scene where the campers pass through the the town of Endora and the voice over(Gilbert) says " They are doing the right thing, just passing through", you have a feeling that there is something that is eating Gilbert(In the course of the movie, you will find our what exactly!). He says it with a resigned realization which has a hint of world weariness in it. Then Gilbert (Depp) goes on to describe his life in a nutshell with the same forlorn voice, which sounds quite ambiguous and vacillates from sounding content to sounding resigned. Bjorn Isfalt and Alan Parker's music adds to the experience by giving a countryside feel where air is not recycled but takes the form of wind.

You cannot be a DiCaprio fan unless you have watched him in this movie because his performance in this one is just stellar. His portrayal of on autistic 17 year old is just incredibly life like.

The movie shows us how the inevitable circumstantial suppression of desires gives way to a lot of unexpected behavior from an individual. All the characters in this movie trapped in their respective situations, represent the    complications in familial ties in face of a single incident. The movie drives home the point that human beings (the phlegmatic ones too!) find it hard to cope with any kind of change in their life. Gilbert's vulnerability due to his situation can be viewed both as the cause of his problems(which of course were only for the 118 minutes!) and also a way of moving ahead in life( which actually is a circle!).

The work of art and the artist in not to enhance the existential angst of his fellow beings but is to make him optimistic about his sojourn on the planet earth. Our game was over a long time back,  love and humor is the only chance we have, although I am not too sure about the first one. Lets not blow it away.
